A passion for non-profits
I am passionate about the power of the non-profit sector. As a Director, Consultant and volunteer for organizations worldwide working in health, education and international development I have managed budgets of up to $12million, and teams of both staff and volunteers. My employers and clients have been based in the UK, Canada, Belgium, Norway, Kenya,Tanzania and Sudan.
Problem solving - combining theory and practice
Non-profits are complex organizations, as are the issues they face every day - not just funding, but planning, governance, accountability and the increasing blurring of boundaries with the business and public sectors. My approach combines practical, hard won know-how with non-profit management theory studied as part of an MSc in Non-Profit Management and Organization from the London School of Economics. I believe the unique problems confronting non-profits require equally distinct solutions.
Skills I offer clients include: fundraising, strategic planning, program development and implementation, proposal writing, monitoring/evaluation and copy writing. My most recent research, published on-line in Village Vibes, focuses on the rise of the 'hybrid' non-profit; what happens when you mix and match non-profit and for profit principles? I have also written about what UK non-profits - seduced by the alluring concept of 'Big Society' promoted by the current Prime Minister - might learn from their Canadian counterparts.
Living, volunteering, learning and working in Vancouver
Arriving in Canada from the UK in 2006, I now live in Vancouver with my wife and two young children. My volunteer commitments have included work as a Board member at Westside Family Place and I am an active member of PAC at my children's school. I completed a course at Langara College, looking at the strategies of BC community groups responding to the challenges they face in 2012 and beyond.
